The lithograph shows the fighting at Fredericksburg, Virginia, where the Union assault of December 13, 1862, was a costly failure. Ambrose Burnside sent Union troops across open ground toward Confederate lines on the heights behind the town, and they were driven back with heavy losses. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive color prints of current events, issued the picture the same year, so it shows how northern households were offered the battle while the news was still fresh and the outcome was hard to accept.
