The print's title places the fight at "Pittsburgh, Tenn.," the Tennessee River landing that the Union army knew as Pittsburg Landing and that gave the battle its usual name, Shiloh. Grant's army was caught by a Confederate attack on April 6, 1862, and held on through the first day until Union reinforcements arrived overnight. The counterattack on April 7 pushed the Confederates back, but the two days cost more than 23,000 men killed, wounded, and missing. Currier & Ives sold such lithographs to a public eager for news from the front, and this one dates from the year of the battle itself.
