Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant appears here in a portrait lithograph that also lists the battles in which he commanded, a format popular in the Civil War era for honoring a commander's record. Printed images like this circulated widely in the North, where Grant's string of victories from Fort Donelson through Vicksburg and Chattanooga made him a national hero. Grant was promoted to lieutenant general in 1864, a rank previously held only by George Washington, and he went on to lead Union armies to victory before winning the presidency in 1868.
