Here Grant stands in full length, turned to the left and posed beside his war horse, Cincinnati, a detail that sets this portrait apart from the many head-and-shoulders studies of the general. The photograph is an albumen print, a process widely used in the 1860s that gave sharp detail and a warm tone, and its date of June 4, 1864 places it during the Overland Campaign in Virginia, when Grant was directing the Union armies against Robert E. Lee. Pictures like this helped build the public image of the commanding general as a steady, hands-on soldier, and the horse itself became a familiar companion in wartime publicity.
