Franklin D. Roosevelt appears here in a half-length view, standing and facing left, beside his son James Roosevelt, who was born in 1907 and later served in Congress and became a businessman and insurance executive. The record dates the print to about 1940, a year when Roosevelt was seeking an unprecedented third term as president and the country was still deciding how far to stay out of the war in Europe. Father and son had a close working relationship, with James serving as an aide and sometimes as a stand-in during the 1930s. Portraits like this one, showing the president with a family member, were a common way to present him as a relatable and steady figure.
