Franklin D. Roosevelt stands mid-speech in this photograph, turned to his left and addressing a crowd outdoors. The record credits Weltbild, a Berlin picture agency, and dates the print to 1934, when Roosevelt was in the early years of his presidency and the New Deal dominated coverage of American politics. Agencies like Weltbild supplied illustrated European newspapers and magazines, so the picture shows how foreign editors chose to present the American president to their readers. The spectators, whose faces are mostly indistinct, make the frame useful for studying public speaking and audience behavior in the 1930s.
