Shot around 1913, this three-quarter-length portrait shows Franklin D. Roosevelt seated and turned to his left, a pose typical of formal studio portraiture of the decade. That year marked the start of his public career in Washington, when he took office as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson at age 31. The picture captures him at the threshold of a long run in federal government, years before his later service as governor of New York and president. Portraits from this period were often made for officials and their families, and they show how photographers of the 1910s framed men of public standing.
