Seated and turned to the left in a three-quarter view, Franklin D. Roosevelt appears in this portrait from around 1931, when he was governor of New York and had not yet launched his campaign for the presidency. The print was made by Margaret DeM. Brown and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was meant for wider circulation. Portraits like this spread widely in the early 1930s as Roosevelt's public profile grew, helping to shape the image of a confident, approachable politician before he took office in 1933.
