Roosevelt is shown seated on a porch, turned to the right, in a three-quarter length view that puts his posture and setting at the center of the frame. The record dates the picture to around October 1931, a period when Roosevelt was serving his first term as governor of New York and had not yet begun his campaign for the presidency. Portraits from this stretch of his public life often show him in informal, relaxed settings rather than formal studio poses, which helped build the approachable image he would later rely on heavily in his radio addresses and political appearances.
