Eleanor Roosevelt sits in right profile at a table, turned toward Clare Boothe Luce, who is at a microphone, in this May 1950 view taken at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. By then Roosevelt was well past her years as First Lady and was working on the world stage, including her role as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations and her work on human rights. The Waldorf was a common venue for public forums and civic events of the period.
