Eleanor Roosevelt appears here in a bust-length portrait turned to her right, a format that suited the many formal studio sittings she gave during the 1930s. She was then serving as First Lady during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency, a role she reshaped by holding her own press conferences, writing a daily newspaper column, and traveling widely to speak on behalf of the New Deal and social causes. The record dates the picture to about 1934, when she was becoming one of the most closely watched women in the country. Its caption card notes the photograph's place among portraits of presidents' wives, a category that reflects how public her image had become.
