Eleanor Roosevelt appears here beside a small girl, both turned to the right, in a portrait whose caption card records no date. The sitter is the wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served as First Lady from 1933 to 1945 and became one of the most visible public women of the twentieth century, known for her writing, her press conferences and her work on human rights after World War II. Because the card gives no date, the picture is best read as a glimpse of her public image in the decades she was in the national spotlight, when photographs of her with children and everyday visitors were often used to show her warmth and accessibility.
