Three former first ladies appear together in this 1955 photograph, which sets it apart from ordinary portraits of Eleanor Roosevelt. Bess Truman had left the White House in 1953 when her husband's term ended, and Mrs. Wilson, the widow of President Woodrow Wilson, had been out of the role since 1921. By the mid-1950s Roosevelt was known as a public figure in her own right, having chaired the United Nations Commission on Human Rights during the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Pictures like this show how these women kept their public presence long after leaving the executive mansion.
