Eleanor Roosevelt is the figure here, shown at half length and facing right as she gives an address at the housewarming of the new headquarters of the Democratic Women's Workshop in New York City. The photograph is dated January 5, 1956, and was taken by United Press, which places it among the wire-service images of the period. Although Roosevelt is often seen in this gallery beside her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, this picture shows her in her own right, active in Democratic politics after his death in 1945. Her postwar work included leadership on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and by the mid-1950s she was an influential voice within the party.
