Eleanor Roosevelt stands before a microphone in this half-length portrait, turned to her right as though addressing an audience just beyond the frame. The record dates it to before November 8, 1943, a period when she was already widely known for the radio broadcasts, press conferences and lecture tours she used to speak on behalf of wartime civilians, refugees and social causes. Her public voice was a deliberate part of her role as First Lady, and images like this one capture how central speaking to the public had become to her work during the Second World War.
