Franklin D. Roosevelt sits here in a half-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, a pose that suggests the calm, composed face he presented to the public during his third and fourth terms. The photograph dates to about 1943, a year when the United States was deep in the Second World War and Roosevelt was managing the Allied war effort alongside Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. Portraits from this period were widely distributed to newspapers and government offices, so the image reflects the carefully measured public image of a wartime commander in chief. It is held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
