Franklin Delano Roosevelt appears here in profile, turned to the right, in a bust-length view dated to about 1942. That year was the first full year of American involvement in the Second World War, which followed the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and Roosevelt was then in his third term as president. Portraits from this period often served to project steady leadership to a public facing wartime rationing, mobilization and anxiety over the fighting overseas. The profile angle is worth noting, since it departs from the frontal pose many official portraits of the president favored.
