Here Franklin Delano Roosevelt is seen head and shoulders, seated and turned to his left, a pose that photographers of his era often used to show the president's profile and expression at once. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting itself cannot be placed precisely, but the portrait belongs to the long stretch between 1933 and his death in 1945, when his image was reproduced constantly in newspapers, newsreels and government publications. Roosevelt, who led the country through the Great Depression and most of the Second World War, understood the value of a carefully composed photograph, and portraits like this one helped shape how Americans saw their wartime leader.
