Taken in late December 1933, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows Franklin D. Roosevelt in profile turned slightly to the left, during his first year as president, when the New Deal programs were taking shape. The photographer, Elias Goldensky, registered the image for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office, and the record notes that the copyright was never renewed. Portraits like this one were widely circulated in the 1930s, and they shaped how the public saw a president who relied heavily on his public image through newspapers, magazines and newsreels.
