Rendered as a head-and-shoulders study with the sitter turned slightly to the left, this engraving shows Franklin D. Roosevelt in the years of his presidency, between 1930 and 1946. It was cut by J. Eissler and credited to the Bureau of Engraving, the federal agency that produced engraved work for paper money and securities. Engraving was a precise, labor-intensive method, valued for the fine line and tonal control it gave to official portraits. The print belongs to the Ruthven Deane Collection at the Library of Congress, which preserves engraved portraits of many public figures from this period.
