This head-and-shoulders study shows Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned slightly to the left, a pose that was common in formal portraiture of the era. The print dates to about 1920, the year Roosevelt ran for vice president on the Democratic ticket with James M. Cox and lost, so it captures him during his early national political career, before polio would reshape his life in 1921. The Library of Congress holds it in the Prints and Photographs Division, and its copyright notation suggests it was registered for publication, which would have made images like this widely circulated in newspapers and campaign materials.
