Turned slightly to the right in a tight head-and-shoulders frame, Eleanor Roosevelt appears in a portrait dated around July 20, 1933, about four months into her husband's first term as president. As first lady she was already stepping beyond the traditional role, traveling widely, speaking to groups and holding press conferences for women reporters, and images like this one helped the public form its picture of her. The record also notes a U.S. Copyright Office entry without renewal, a small reminder of how studio portraits of public figures were registered and circulated in the 1930s.
