Eleanor Roosevelt sits for this head-and-shoulders portrait, photographed facing the camera in a formal composition typical of the studio work of the early 1930s. The image is dated to about July 20, 1933, a few months after her husband took office as president in March of that year, when the country was deep in the Great Depression and the new First Lady was only beginning to define her public role. Portraits like this one were widely circulated in newspapers and magazines, and they helped establish the image of a figure who would become one of the most visible and active women in American public life.
