Looking straight into the lens, Franklin D. Roosevelt appears in this 1928 head-and-shoulders portrait, a frontal pose typical of the Washington studio of Underwood & Underwood, the firm known for its many images of public figures. That year Roosevelt won the governorship of New York, a step that set him on the path to the presidency he would win in 1932. He had been stricken with polio in 1921, and by the late 1920s he was rebuilding his public career, so portraits from this period show a politician carefully presenting himself to the public.
