In this portrait, Roosevelt sits in profile before a microphone, turned to the right as he speaks during one of his radio fireside chats. Beginning in 1933, these informal broadcasts let the president address Americans directly from the White House, and they became a defining feature of his leadership during the Great Depression. The 1937 broadcasts dealt with the domestic issues of that year, including his proposal to reorganize the federal judiciary. The photograph shows the intimate, conversational style that made the chats so effective with listeners.
