Turned to the right and framed from the head and shoulders, this portrait shows Franklin D. Roosevelt in a quieter pose than the seated and speaking images usually associated with him. Roosevelt died in April 1945, so the c1947 date suggests the print was made or circulated after his death, when his likeness was widely reproduced in memorials and books. He led the country through the Great Depression and most of World War II, and his face became one of the most recognizable of the 20th century. The print is credited to photographer Maurice Constant and is held by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
