Standing full-length and turned to the left, Eleanor Roosevelt wears a formal inaugural gown in this portrait, dated around 1933. That was the year her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, took office as president on March 4, and the Inaugural Ball that week drew the capital's social and political figures. Formal portraits like this one, made to mark the occasion, showed the first lady in the public role she was then assuming. The print was also deposited for U.S. copyright, which helped it survive in the national collections.
