Eleanor Roosevelt stands full length in this portrait, dressed in the gown she wore for her husband's first inauguration in March 1933, just as Franklin D. Roosevelt took office during the Great Depression. The picture dates to about that year, the start of a 12-year tenure as First Lady that she would reshape. She used the role to speak on social issues, wrote a newspaper column, and held press conferences open only to women reporters. Formal studio portraits of the period usually stressed fine dress and upright posture, and this one follows that convention while showing a woman who would become one of the century's most visible public figures.
