Standing at the foot of a staircase and facing left, Eleanor Roosevelt is shown full length, and her signed inscription to an ambassador, offered with affectionate regard, makes this a personal gift. It dates from between 1932 and 1944, when she was First Lady and a tireless advocate for civil rights, young people and the unemployed. The photograph carries a copyright credit to Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm whose images ran widely in the press. The title was written by Library of Congress staff rather than the photographer.
