Shown full length and turned to the left, this portrait presents Alexander Hamilton as a standing figure rather than a bust-length likeness. Hamilton never won the presidency, so his place on a board of presidents reflects his role as a founder. He was the first Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington and a co-author of The Federalist Papers. This color mezzotint, dated around 1932, is a later reproduction, and its soft tonal shading suits the formal, painterly style of historical portraiture. Hamilton died in 1804 after a duel with Aaron Burr.
