Taft stands full length here in Masonic regalia, a dress that sets this portrait apart from his more formal presidential likenesses. The photograph was made by Jameson Studio in Alexandria, Virginia, and its copyright notice names Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22, a lodge closely tied to George Washington. Taft, president from 1909 to 1913, was an active Freemason, and the picture shows how fraternal membership could be displayed alongside public office in the early 1910s. He later became Chief Justice of the United States, the only person to have held both the presidency and that office.
