Franklin D. Roosevelt stands full length in this view, facing left with his hat in hand and his mouth open mid-speech, as if he is addressing a crowd rather than sitting for a formal portrait. The date on the caption card, around August 1920, falls during the campaign in which Roosevelt ran for vice president on the Democratic ticket headed by James M. Cox, and he spent that fall traveling and speaking widely. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented politicians and officials for decades. Because the date comes from an older caption and has not been independently verified, treat it as an estimate.
