This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Grant in profile turned to the left, a pose that sets it apart from the more common front-facing studio views of him. The print carries the imprint of Taber, the San Francisco studio of photographer Isaiah West Taber, and is dated September 22, 1879. That date falls during Grant's return to the United States after his two-year journey around the world, when San Francisco turned out to greet him as a former president. The hand-applied tinting, common in photographs of the period, adds warm color to the face and clothing.
