Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant is shown here in an oval frame, a format engravers and lithographers favored for portrait prints in the 1860s and 1870s. The rank in the title dates the image to the years when Grant commanded Union armies and was celebrated as the hero of the Civil War, a reputation that carried him to the presidency in 1868. Oval portraits like this one were widely sold to a public eager for images of military leaders, so the print offers a window into how Grant was packaged for popular admiration as much as into his own appearance.
