Grant's signing of the Ku-Klux Force Bill on April 20, 1871, is the event shown here, set in the President's Room at the Capitol with Navy Secretary George M. Robeson and a General Porter in attendance. Congress passed the measure to give federal authorities power to prosecute Klan violence against Black voters and officeholders in the South, and Grant had pressed for such a law. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran this wood engraving on May 13, 1871, one of many images the weekly published of Reconstruction-era politics. It is worth looking closely at the formal ceremony itself, since the scene records the signing rather than the violence the law was meant to address.
