A flag-draped coffin stands at the center of the Capitol Rotunda in this view, the place where President James A. Garfield lay in state in September 1881. Garfield had been shot in July of that year at a Washington railroad station and died in New Jersey in mid-September, and the Capitol ceremony drew large crowds of mourners. The photograph was made by C.M. Bell, a Washington studio photographer who documented many public events and buildings of the period. Its carefully composed view of the hushed rotunda offers a record of the national mourning that followed the assassination.
