Few portraits capture a statesman in his final hours, and this pencil sketch by an artist identified only as A.J.S. shows John Quincy Adams at the Capitol in Washington in February 1848, after he collapsed on the House floor. Adams had served as the sixth president before returning to Congress in 1831, where he spent 17 years fighting the gag rule that blocked antislavery petitions. The drawing is one of three related sketches in the Library of Congress, and it records a scene of mourning and vigil rather than a formal likeness.
