This steel engraving presents Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury and a leading voice for the Constitution, drawn from a painting by Chappel and issued by the New York firm Johnson, Fry & Co. in 1861. The sheet's note that the painting was held by the publishers suggests they controlled the source image and profited from reproducing it. Steel engraving was prized in the mid-19th century for its fine, durable lines, which made it well suited to portrait series and books. Publishing a Founding Father's likeness in 1861, as the country moved toward civil war, reflected a broader interest in the Revolutionary generation as symbols of national unity.
