This portrait of Andrew Jackson is a hand-colored lithograph, with its watercolor tinting applied by hand, and it reproduces an original painting by W.J. Hubard. The image was drawn on stone by A. Newsam and published in Philadelphia by Lehman & Duval around 1830, the year after Jackson took office as the seventh president. Lithography was then a relatively new and affordable way to spread likenesses of public figures, so prints like this one brought a president's face into parlors and print shops far beyond the reach of the original canvas.
