Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned slightly to the right, a pose that suggests the calm dignity nineteenth-century portrait makers liked to give their subjects. Because this is a chromolithograph, the image was built from several stone or metal plates, each inked in a different color, a process that let printers reproduce a portrait in color at a price ordinary buyers could afford. Prints like this circulated widely between 1850 and 1900, when Jackson had become a figure of enduring public memory, and they show how his image was kept alive long after his death in 1845.
