This photograph reproduces a painting by Joseph-Siffrède Duplessis, the French court portraitist, showing Benjamin Franklin in a fur-collared coat, turned slightly to the right. Franklin sat for portraits like this during his years in Paris, when he served as American envoy and sought French support for the Revolution, and the fur collar and plain dress became part of his familiar image. The print dates to about 1907, when reproductions of well-known portraits were widely made and registered for copyright, and it shows how Franklin's likeness was circulated long after the original was painted.
