This c1907 photograph reproduces Joseph-Siffrède Duplessis's painting of Benjamin Franklin, showing the statesman in a head-and-shoulders view turned slightly to the right, with a fur collar framing his shoulders. Duplessis painted Franklin in Paris in the late 1770s, when Franklin was serving as American envoy to France and his image was in great demand. The print was made for copyright registration, one of many photographic reproductions of well-known portraits circulating in the early twentieth century.
