Benjamin Franklin is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the right, a pose that puts his face in profile-leaning three-quarter view and gives the portrait a sober, direct character. The record dates it to 1779, a busy year for Franklin, who was serving as the American commissioner in France and working to win French support for the Revolutionary War. Portraits of him from this period circulated widely in Paris and across Europe, where his plain dress and spectacles helped make him a popular symbol of the young American republic. Franklin's fame as a scientist and writer made images like this especially sought after.
