This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Benjamin Franklin turned to the left, with his face and upper body filling the frame. Franklin died in 1790, decades before photography was invented in the late 1830s, so a photograph of him must reproduce an earlier painting, drawing or engraving rather than capture him from life. The print is dated to about May 9, 1928, when his face was already familiar from schoolbooks and the $100 bill. The Library of Congress holds it in its Prints and Photographs Division.
