Turned to the left in a bust-length pose, this portrait reproduces a painting by Charles Willson Peale, the Philadelphia artist who painted Benjamin Franklin several times in the 1780s. By then Franklin was in his late seventies and serving as president of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, and Peale's likenesses helped define the public image of the printer, inventor and diplomat who had secured French support during the Revolution. The print dates from about 1914 and was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, so it also shows how early twentieth-century audiences chose to remember him.
