A cut-paper silhouette shows Benjamin Franklin standing full length with a cane, turned to the left, so the cane and the posture of the figure do most of the work. Silhouettes like this were made by hand, often with scissors, and were a fashionable, inexpensive likeness in the late 1700s, when Franklin's face was familiar on both sides of the Atlantic. He spent much of 1776 to 1785 in France as an American envoy, where his image was widely reproduced. The caption card gives no date, so the cane and the outline of the figure are the best clues to its place in his later years.
