Seated rather than standing, this Franklin in Waterbury, Connecticut, sets the picture apart from the many standing statues of the statesman. Paul Wayland Bartlett, the sculptor credited in the record, was a well-known American sculptor who worked often in Paris, and this figure faces slightly left, giving the view a three-quarter angle. Waterbury, long a center of brass and metalworking, was a fitting place for a memorial to a printer and inventor. The date is given only with a question mark, so the 1921 year should be treated as approximate.
