Benjamin Franklin is shown here in three-quarter length, standing and turned to the left, a pose that lets the viewer see his posture and dress rather than only his face. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact age is unknown, but its subject places it among the many engraved and printed likenesses made of Franklin during his long public career as a printer, scientist, and diplomat. Such portraits circulated widely in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when printed images of notable Americans were prized by readers and collectors. Franklin lived from 1706 to 1790, and the print's subject alone connects it to the Revolutionary era.
