Showing Benjamin Franklin from behind, this full-length standing view departs from the front-facing likenesses most often reproduced of him. The caption card records no date, so the exact date of making is uncertain, but Franklin's image was engraved and printed repeatedly from the 1760s on, as he became well known in Britain and France as a printer, scientist and diplomat. Printmakers answered public interest in the man who would help shape the American cause. The figure's posture and clothing show how an artist chose to present him, as a dignified gentleman or as a man of learning.
