Shown in bust length and turned slightly to the right, Franklin appears here as an engraving made around 1835, the approximate date given in the record. The print was cut by R.W. Dodson after a painting by James Barton Longacre, so the image passes through two hands: Longacre's paint and Dodson's line. Franklin had died in 1790, and by the 1830s his likeness was widely reproduced as a symbol of the printer, scientist and diplomat who helped found the nation. Viewers may want to compare the engraver's fine hatching with the softer tones a painter would use.
